Why 48 teams in 2026?

FIFA expanded the World Cup from 32 to 48 teams starting with the 2026 edition, which is co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The larger format gives more nations a path to the finals — there are now 16 qualified AFC teams, 9 CAF teams, 6 CONMEBOL teams, and 16 UEFA teams among others. The expansion was approved in 2017, ahead of Russia 2018. The first 48-team World Cup delivers 104 total matches, up from 64.

Group stage: 12 groups of 4

The group stage uses 12 groups of 4 teams. Every team plays 3 matches — once against each of the other 3 teams in its group. The scoring is standard: 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 for a loss.

Who advances from each group? The top 2 teams in each group progress — giving 24 teams from the 12 groups. But in 2026, there's a twist: the 8 best third-placed teams from across all 12 groups also advance. That gives 32 teams total going into the knockout round of 32.

This is the key innovation: unlike 1994 or 2006 (where third-placed teams also advanced with 24 teams), 2026 uses a much larger format that creates a clean 32-team bracket for the knockouts.

Round of 32 — the new knockout stage

The Round of 32 is new to the World Cup in 2026 — it didn't exist in the 32-team format (which went straight from groups of 4 to a round of 16). With 48 teams, after the group stage produces 32 qualifiers, the Round of 32 cuts the field in half.

32 matches → 16 winners → Round of 16. All knockout-stage matches are single-leg, 90 minutes, with 30 minutes of extra time and then penalties if level. No away-goal rule. There are no replays.

Round of 16 through to the final

From the Round of 16 onward, the bracket structure is standard single-elimination:

  • Round of 16: 16 teams → 8 matches → 8 winners
  • Quarter-finals: 8 teams → 4 matches → 4 winners
  • Semi-finals: 4 teams → 2 matches → 2 finalists + 2 third-place play-off participants
  • Third-place play-off: The two losing semi-finalists play for bronze
  • Final: One match decides the champion
